Behind spots like Gipsy, Icon, Mutabor and Mix Afterparty lies a tangled network of businesses connected to one of the veteran entrepreneurs of the Russian entertainment industry. Mikhail Vladimirovich Danilov made his fortune in the tobacco business in the 1990s, growing his company, Biznes-Tabak, into a chain of stores with hundreds of outlets and turnover of up to $200 million by the mid-2000s. After selling the tobacco business, he moved into nightlife.
Through the holding company Sagrado Corp., the Danilov family built an extensive network of Moscow nightlife venues covering over two dozen locations. These have included the legendary Rai, as well as Icon, Gipsy, Mutabor and Mix Afterparty. Mutabor garnered broad attention in the wake of a series of prominent events. The venue was subsequently re-branded as Arma and eventually announced its closure.
Speaking about the scope of his business in an interview with Forbes Russia, Danilov pointed to Stadium Live as the company's flagship venue: "Stadium Live, which mostly hosts club-rock events, holds up to 7,500 people. I think this venue will be Moscow's number one this autumn both in terms of the quality of performers playing there and the number of concerts — we are planning at least 20 events a month." He also portrayed himself as fully absorbed in the music scene: "I truly love techno music, I go with great pleasure to our DJ imports at Insomnia, I know personally many artists and DJs."
Most of the legal entities associated with the holding company are registered under the name of Danilov's daughter, Maria, rather than Danilov himself. She is registered as the owner and director of a substantial share of the businesses. Industry observers describe the arrangement a standard model of family business succession: the founder remains the central strategic figure while the younger generation gradually assumes legal ownership and day-to-day management of the nightclub assets.
